Fried Green Tomatoes

At the peak of my garden's tomato harvest, I decided to shun the ripest of the crop and go for the hard green ones instead. I know, I's craziness! But you see, it's not my fault. When I saw that fellow blogger and friend Moogie had made a batch of fried green tomatoes I was overcome with the need to try these myself. I couldn't wait another day. So you can blame her and I'll be off the hook.

I won't post her recipe here because I didn't change a thing to the basic fried tomato ingredients or technique. I did however change the sauce to be used to top the tomatoes. Moogie made a basil mayo, which sounds completely delicious. But I had more poblano peppers I was dealing with so I decided to make this roasted poblano and lime mayonnaise instead.

Roasted Poblano and Lime Mayonnaise

1 poblano pepper, roasted, skinned and seeded
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1 TBSP fresh lime juice
1 cup reduced-fat mayonnaise
seasoned salt and pepper to taste

In food processor, pulse peppers until finely minced. Add garlic powder, lime juice and mayonnaise. Pulse to thoroughly combine. Season with seasoned salt and pepper to taste.

Oooooo, Ooooooo, Ooooooo I know all about these tastey morsels! Out of necessity we learned that in Arizonas high country it's nearly impossible to produce a decent crop of red full sized tomatoes. With the first frosts occuring in late August early September it's either preserve them or deep fry them. I had never tried them before. I was a skeptic until the first bite!

Bob: I'd have never believed that it could frost in Az before Indiana until I visited my inlaws out there and they took us up into the higher elevations. Blazing hot desert one minute, frigid cold mountains, the next. Crazy! And yes, fried green tomatoes are something that one needs to be talked into trying, but once bitten, not twice shy!

Fried Green tomatoes always brings back memories of that delightful movie( oops, now you know my age!!), I have never tried it myself, but will surely aim to do it soon!!!

Your tomatoes look perfect.

But I hate dredging food through eggs, milk, and or flour and cornmeal. What a freaking mess!!! Then you have the grease mess from frying. Although it really seasoned my cast iron skillet to a beautiful midnight black.

They sound delicious! I have actually never tried these before, but I think I might have to. I'm not usually one to deep fry, but you may have convinced me.

Oh geez Mags, you've done it again. These look amazing and the poblano lime mayo...well, that I'm gonna make. The tomatoes - no such thing down in the AZ "low country", aka deep south. My green tomatoes fried themselves before I could even harvest them last year. It was such a bust we didnt' plant one darn thing this year. By the way, have fun at your family re-onion! What'cha cook'in?

Have you seen that movie "Fried Green Tomatoes"? It's one of my fav movies and I've been wanting to try fried green tomatoes ever since...have yet to find green tomatoes locally though.
