Roasted Poblano And Corn Chowder

My prolific poblano pepper plants are continually forcing me to come up with new recipes. Last week's chiles rellenos fiasco has been put aside and I've forged ahead with yet another way to incorporate this lovely pepper into my recipe collection.

Do not be afraid. Channel your inner Child (Julia, that is) and know that making soup should be as comforting as curling up with your favorite book. Lots of love mixed with chopped veggies, and interspersed with a little broth and herbs. It's a wonderful thing. Feeling relaxed now? You should be.

By the way, is anyone else out there freakishly giddy about Julie & Julia opening in theaters this week?

Roasted Poblano And Corn Chowder

3 poblano peppers, washed, halved and seeded
1 red bell pepper, washed, halved and seeded
3 Tbsp olive oil
1 onion, diced
1 stalk celery, diced
2 cloves garlic, diced
1 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp oregano
salt and pepper
3 Tbsp all-purpose flour
1 1/2 quarts chicken broth
1 1/2 pounds red-skinned potatoes, scrubbed, unpeeled, diced into small cubes
1 20-oz tube of frozen creamed corn, thawed
2 cups frozen corn kernels
1/2 cup half & half

Broil pepper halves, skin side up, on an aluminum foil-lined baking sheet 6 inches from heat for 7-8 minutes or until pepper looks blistered. Place peppers in a ziploc baggie, seal closed and let stand for 10-15 minutes. Peel skin from peppers and dice.

Heat oil in large soup pot over medium heat. Add onions and celery. Season with cumin, oregano, salt and pepper and saute until onions are translucent, 5-7 minutes. Add garlic and saute for another minute or two. Sprinkle flour over all and stir to combine. Cook, stirring frequently, for 2-3 minutes. Slowly add broth to pot. Increase the heat a bit and bring to a boil. Season with more salt (1/2-1 tsp) and add potatoes, creamed corn and diced roasted peppers. Reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until potatoes are almost fork tender. Add frozen corn kernels and simmer for 5-10 more minutes. Remove from heat and stir in half & half.

Wow - too funny! I just made a roasted jalapeno and corn chowder on Friday night. Very similar flavors. Great minds think alike!

GMTA indeed! I actually thought a jalapeno would have kicked this chowder up to a whole new level, but my daughter's taste buds are wimpy and don't like the added heat.

This post makes me sad that I chose to not plant any poblanos this year. They are wonderful, and this looks great!

1. I am SO making this chowder this week. I wish I had planted a garden this year, but instead, I was in the hospital during planting time. Screw it. I'll go to the farmers market and hit up one of my farmer guys for some fresh poblanos!

3. Julie/Julia? I am reading the book right now. Saw it at the library last week and snatched that sucker up before someone else got it. I cannot wait to see the movie. I *heart* that book!

I just asked DH this morning if we could go to the movie on Friday, luckily for me he agreed. :) He likes Meryl Streep. Can't wait to try this recipe, my garden is over producing peppers this year...lots of rain. :)
