I have a secret little vice that I indulge in every October. It's candy corn, or as we in the dental biz like to call it, cavity corn. It has to be Brach's candy corn because they're the only ones who know the correct proportions of sugar, corn syrup, and confectioner's glaze. I mean, if they screwed that up, it might not taste like pure sugar! These candy corn cookies taste nothing like candy corn, but in the spirit of the upcoming Halloween holiday, I thought I'd spend three times the amount of time I'd normally spend making regular sugar cookies and make something festive for the season. After all, they ARE for the co-irkers.
Candy Corn Sugar Cookies (from Betty Crocker's Fall Baking)
1 cup butter
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 large egg
Grated zest of one medium orange (1-2 TBSP)
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cream of tartar
1/8 tsp orange gel food coloring
1/8 tsp yellow gel food coloring
Coarse sugar to decorate
In large bowl, beat butter, powdered sugar, egg and orange zest with electric mixer on medium speed. Stir in flour, baking soda and cream of tartar.
Divide dough into thirds. Tint one portion orange, one portion yellow, and leave the third portion plain. Flatten each portion into a disk. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 20 minutes.
On separate sheets of lightly floured wax paper, roll each portion of dough into 12X9 inch rectangles. Place orange rectangle on top of yellow rectangle, using waxed paper ends to help flip dough over. Top with plain dough rectangle. Starting on a long side, and using waxed paper as an aid, roll dough into a cylinder. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cut dough into 1/4 inch slices. On ungreased cookie sheet, place slices about one inch apart. Sprinkle with coarse sugar.
Bake for 7-8 minutes or until edges are set. Cool one minute before removing from cookie sheet to cooling rack.

OK - I could do the cookies because I like oranges - but I just cannot tolerate candy corn - too sweet for me! They are really pretty cookies - the co-irkers are gonna love them!!!!
These are adorable!!! You really treat the co-irkers well!!
I saw these in the Betty Crocker baking book! They look delicious. You can have my candy corn, way too sweet for me!!
They are so cute!! Candy corn. I sat out a bowl on my table as cute, holiday, edible decor. That was a big mistake on my part.
I definitely would prefer your sugar cookie over candy corn any time!
Your cookies are perfect for the season! I'm sure they taste way better than candy corn. :-)
Those look fabulous! And I love your inspiration. There's a bag of candy corn on my counter that I'm really trying not to open. :)
Those co-irkers must love you! Those cookies are so cute and colorful. :)
Wow.... that three hour nap that you took yesterday must have given you the extra energy to put into these cookies. They look to damn good for those co-irks.
These do look very good and they seem to be pretty easy to make. My kids will love these.
Fun, Mags! I've got to make these ASAP!
Can I be a co-irker???
I never really liked candy corn, but this cookie version is right up my alley!
What fun cookies! Love them!
going the extra mile is just pure love... me on the other hand... I'm lazy :D
Adorable cookies Mags! Holy cow...what a lot of work. (I'm not into candy corn either. Candy = chocolate and/or caramel)
how fun!
on a totally different topic: Luis read an article that said we could save money if I started making our own bread with a bread machine. oooookaaaayyyy. Like that $2.50 or so a week is really killing us. I do like baking up a nice loaf of bread from frozen Rhodes dough, but I wonder: can I freeze homemade bread dough and use it like the Rhodes stuff? Would I freeze it after the first rising? I could possibly be talked into making my own bread if I didn't have to plan a whole day to babysit the process. A half day, maybe. :)
p.s. my verification word was: whauf --I had to do a double take! lol
Hey!! These are really cute :))
greets from BFC!!!
Adorable!
So I pop over to Tastespotting and what is the first thing I see - the lovely photo of these cookies - NICE! You ARE the best!
I LOVE these! I only use the candy corn to make vampire teeth to make Dudette laugh. I do like to have one of the Halloween pumpkin candy corns though. Just one satisfies for the whole year. I'm making these cookies. They look fantastic.
Candy corn is MY secret fall vice, too! =) And I completely agree about the brand - it makes all of the difference. These look so great!
Thanks for all the wonderful comments!
Niece Denise: I'll email you about the bread thing, OK?
So cute! I for sure need to put these on the list to make for October!
I love these...they are perfect seasonal treats!
I really have only one question...how to I become a Co-Irker?!
First off: May I tell you how much I love this photo? The composition and color are spot on.
Now let's get down to the nitty gritty or the sugar cookie. They were adorable, they were festive, and best of all they were dang tasty. I had to hide one for a co-irker that came a little late (I swear it was for her!) because they went fast.
The time and effort are much appreciated at the hubs work. And we office girls are petitioning to have your birthday recognized as a work holiday.
Sorry everyone but we currently are not accepting applications.
Thanks again our corny, comfort food conjuring cream puff.

what adorable cookies! Can't wait to try these out!
These look great! I really like candy corn, so the color stripes caught my eye. I have to try these.
Mags, these are SO cute!!! Great job!
These are so delicious looking, Mags, and I've been jealous of your co-irkers for quite a while now. I'm definitely going to try these, but - don't tell! - I'm going to see if I can sneak some actual candy corn into mine. Heathy or not, I adore the stuff!
