Smoked turkey soup with yellow split peas and black lentils

The other day hubby asked me if I'd noticed that our grocery bill had gone down significantly since I was no longer buying cigarettes. I told him that when I got my peanut M&M's down under three packs a day, I'd let him know.

Aside from the M&M's (and that's a huge aside, I know) we've been trying to eat healthier since the beginning of the new year. If heavy cream and/or cheese are not in the list of ingredients, soup is almost always a great choice for a lower fat and calorie meal. Plus, I find that making soup is a very soothing and creative activity. From choosing the ingredients and cutting the vegetables to the final spice selection, making soup is a bit like conducting a symphony. Only there are no musicians or musical instruments or music. Lord, I'm turning into a loon.

Smoked turkey soup with yellow split peas and black lentils

I used stock made from the carcass of a smoked turkey for the base of this soup but if you can't get your hands on some smoked turkey or ham stock, feel free to use regular chicken stock. You'll most likely need to add salt at some point however. I didn't add any to this soup recipe because the stock was salty enough.

8 cups smoked turkey stock
8 oz. yellow split peas, sorted and rinsed
1 onion, diced
2 celery stalks, diced
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp mild curry powder
1/4 tsp turmeric
pinch of cayenne pepper
black pepper
2 jarred roasted red peppers, diced
1 large sweet potato, peeled and 1/2" diced
8 oz cooked black lentils
2 cups cooked and diced smoked turkey

In a large soup pot heat the stock to boiling. Add the peas, onion, celery, cumin, curry powder, turmeric, cayenne and regular black pepper. Reduce heat and simmer for about an hour and 15 minutes, or until peas are just starting to fall apart. Add the red peppers and sweet potatoes and continue simmering another 15 minutes or until sweet potatoes are tender. Stir in the cooked lentils and turkey and simmer for another 5-10 minutes.

Smokin' - and in a fabulous way - you are no longer a big smoking turkey!!!! - just think of all of the fabulous kitchen gadgets you will now be able to afford! All of those rich ingredients you always wanted to try! Go Mags, Go!!!

I might make some soup tonight. It's definitely a great way to eat more healthfully.

I've never had yellow split peas, but I'm sure I'd enjoy them.

Stay far away from the pretzel m&ms or you may start buying those regularly too!

When I saw the word Smoked up there, I have to admit I got nervous, but I'm glad to see that it's the turkey, not you (no further comment).

The soup does look delicious and even creamy, which is my favorite ::sigh:: kind even though it shouldn't be.

I'm lovin' what you did with this soup. Mild curry, sweet potatoes, beans and smoked turkey. Great! really great. I'm excited to give it a try. However I will wait to get my hands on smoked turkey because I'm certain that takes it to a whole new level.

Last time I used yellow split peas I told the big guy they were beans and he loved the soup, so when I make this I'll be changing the name of this gorgeous looking recipe to "Smoked Turkey Soup with yellow split BEANS"...is that OK Maestro if you please?

I've been in a soup mood too...and made a lentil soup last night! Grumpy's alreay been complaining that his co-worker is getting mad at him because of the fiber breakfast bars I have been sending with him....just wait until he is around him today! he he.

Great work on the quitting smoking. I quit 11 years ago, and so glad I did. Now, if I could just get hubby to quit.
Make sure you use some of that money you were spending on cigarettes to reward yourself.

Oh goody! Another great idea for my leftover turkey! Btw, a friend once told me a good way to stop smoking ... instead of stuffing a ciggy in your mouth, stuff some food in instead. Hmm, now I know why people say they gain weight after they stop smoking :D
